January, 1886

  1. Worked on the house.  R. H. Evans came here.  Wether fair.
  2. Worked on the house.  Orson killed sheep.  Wether fair.
  3. Sunday.  At home all day.  Not feeling very well.  R. H. Evans came in for a little while.  Wether rainy all day.
  4. Worked on the house after noon.  Cut out door between the chambers.  Rained all night last night and all day today.  Water uncommon hy.
  5. Worked on house after noon.  R. H. Evans left here.  Cleared off today, but snowed a little this evening.
  6. Worked on house.  Orson drawed bark.  G. K. worked with Mr. Hill on road.  Cold and blustering.
  7. Worked on house afternoon.  Mrs. Tubs was in here a little wile.  Took C. A. Burdick's sheep home.  Wether clear but cold.
  8. Worked on the house.  Mother is worse and has been for several days.  Wether fair fore noon and cloudy sfter noon.
  9. Worked on house.  Berthy went to A. Brewers to party.  Snow fell about a foot deep last night.  Is very cold and windy today. 
  10. Sunday at home all day.  Still cold and snowy.  Snow 18 inch deep.
  11. Worked on house.  R. H. Evans came here and traded horses while away.  Wether clear and coald. 
  12. Worked on home.  R. H. Evans left for home.  Received letter from John Glover.  Wether fair but cold.
  13. Worked on house.  Wether fair but very cold.
  14. Worked on house.  Mary fell and hirt hirself. Snow this evening. Wether fair.  Perve Hill's baby died.
  15. Worked on house.  Mary still sick.  Berthy and George went to Colegrove.  Wether fair.
  16. At home all day sick, not able to work.  Wether warmer with a little rain in for part of the day.  Colder, just at night.  Little snow.
  17. Sunday.  At home all day.  Not well.  Perve Hill's baby buryed today.  Wether cold and rainy.
  18. Still unwell and unable to work.  Mutch better this morning.  Wether cloudy with a little snow.
  19. Worked on the house.  Put down carpet in front room.  Orson and Mrs. Zimmerman went to Colegrove this evening.  Wether cloudy with little snow.
  20. Helped put down carpet.  Mary Evans' baby boy born about one o'clock this morning.  Mary Zimmerman and I was here alone with hir.  Mrs. A. P  Brewer and Mrs. C.  D. Gallup came soon after.  Doctor came about 5:00 o'clock.  Wether sunshine and cloudy.
  21. Stayed in room with mother or wife most of all day.  Wether milde but cloudy with a little snow.
  22. Helped about the house.  Mrs. Brewer was here to do up the work.  Wether mostly fair.
  23. Worked on the house some.  Made sled road for A. C. White.  Received oficial notice about Pension claim is done.  Wether is very cold.  10 below, snow.
  24. Sunday.  At home all day.  Rote letter to J. Glover.  Wether clear and cold.
  25. Made slead robe for A.C. White.  Went to Smethport.  Sent vouchers for pension to Pittsburgh.  Wether cloudy with south wind.
  26. Rote letter to Caroline.  Took the baby first time.  Wether cloudy but thawing.
  27. Fixed slead for Mr. Hill and A.C. White.  Orson finished haulling bark for A. C. White.  Wether cloudy and warm with a little rain.
  28. At home with bad headache all day.  Wether warm and rainy.
  29. Went to Colegrove.  Got pump fixed.  Wether little cooler, cloudy with a little snow.
  30. Went to Farmer's Valley.  Took H. Cleveland sheep.  Went to Smethport.  Wether cold with a little snow. 
  31. Sunday.  At home all day.  Mrs. Brewer was here and Hatty went home with her.  Mary was moved into the front room.  Doctor Freemon was here to see Mary.  Wether cloudy and cold with a little snow.

February, 1886

  1. At home.  Not very well.  Orson went to Smethport after medicine for Mary.  Wether cloudy, cold.
  2. Received check for $562.00.  Pension money.  Doctor Freemon was not here for me to go to Buffalo on the 4.
  3. Went to Smethport.  Got check cashed. bot overcoat and drawers and overshoes from D. C. Young.  Left $400.00 with D. C. Young in deposit.  Took his receipt.  Wether fair but very coald.  Orson killed sheep.
  4. At home all day.  Got letter from H. H. Warner.  Set the brass clock to running.  Wether cloudy with ocasional sunshine but very coald.  Mercury down to 20 below zero.
  5. Went to Colegrove.  Paid taxes to A. C. Gallup and P. Colegrove.  Paid Ottis $5.00.  Got hay off Wm. Evans 500 for $4.00.  Wether clear but very coald.  Mercury 24 below zero.
  6. Went to Smethport.  Got horses shod, got ton of fead, got flannel shirts, got oil cloth.  Orson got cutting box.  I got George a book.  Wether cloudy, little snow.
  7. Sunday.  The baby sick this afternoon.  Zimmerman went away today.  Wether clooudy.
  8. Orson got 1/2 ton coal.  I bot one bag of buckwheat flour from A. P. Brewer at $3.80.  Zimmerman folks came back today.  Wether fair.
  9. Built hen house today.  Took things out of shop.  D. S. Patterson was here - after me to go to Buffalo for D. S. Freeman.  Wether fair and sunshiny.
  10. Went to Buffalo.  Stopped at the Bensler House.  Went to get hair cut and then went to Corthouse.  Chet Burdick was on the stand giving his testimony.  After supper rote a letter home then went up to Binnet's Theatre.  Wether fair.
  11. Went to the cort house.  At the cort house nearly all day.  Wether cloudy but warm.
  12. Went to cort house.  In cort all day.  Rote home in evening.  Wether fair in morning, rain just at night.
  13. Went to cort house.  In cort all day.  In evening bot collar and cuffs and collar and cuff buttons.  Wether rainy.
  14. Sunday.  Stayed at hotel til noon.  Went to Niagara Falls.  Crossed the suspension bridge into Canady.  Went up to the Hot Springs.  Went down under the falls.  Went around to the whirlpool rapids.  Took supper at the Weston Hotel, Niagara Falls.  John Salt & Son got back to Buffalo 9:00 in evening.  Wether rainy all day.
  15. In cort all day.  Snowed all day.
  16. In cort all day.  Swore in in after noon.  Rote home this morning.  Wether cloudy, some sun and some snow.
  17. In cort all day.  Evidence closed half passed three.  Went to Theatre this evening.  Wether fair but coald.
  18. In cort til noon.  After noon went to Cuba to see R. H. Evans.  Wether fair.
  19. Stayed with Richard.  Went and had impression taken for set of teath.  Wether rainy with some snow.
  20. Got teath this morning.  Had photo taken.  Came home.  Wether cloudy and coald.
  21. Sunday at home all day.  Wether cold and snowing.
  22. Went down to J. P. Evans.  Wether fair.
  23. Went to Smethport, got bill of goods.  Wether cloudy with a little snow.
  24. Went over to the two mile.  Ate dinner to Will Windsors then went up to G. A. Windsors, then went up to G. L. Kinneys and stayed the night.  Wether fair.
  25. Went over to Annin Creek.  Stayed all night at Caroline's.  Rained  and snowed all day.
  26. Came home.  Mary Evans came with me.  Wether coald with very high winds.
  27. At home all day, had bad coald.  Orson and J. L. K. came home.  Wether fair but very coald.

March, 1886

  1. Paid Miss Perry $112.3Amt. of note and intrist.  Note given March 4, 188Wether clear and coald.
  2. At home all day, sick.  Orson and George and J. L. Kinney went to Smethport.  Got each of the boys a suit of clothes.  Wether fair but coald.
  3. At home sick.  Wether cloudy, coald.
  4. At home sick but a little better.  J. L. Kinney went home and Mary Evans went down to J. P. Evans.  Wether fair.
  5. Mary Evans went home.  A. Eberts sworn as supervisor.  Wether fair.
  6. Worked a little on the house.  Orson came home with lod of straw with oxen.
  7. Sunday at home all day.  Black cow came in.  Had heiffer calf.  Wether fair.
  8. Issued summonz to Mr. J. Brewer against C. M. Hill.  Auditors met.  Horse sick.  Wether cloudy with a little snow.
  9. At home, sick all day.  Orson got lode hay.  Wether  cloudy with little snow, two inches deep.
  10. Went to see A. Rifle.  Got order for lumber.  Leased D. Gallup sap bucket and pan.  Wether fair.
  11. Went to Smethport.  Stayed all night.  Wether fair.
  12. Bot 25 sap buckets off L. Mason.  Bot one bushel beans, one ceg nales,  Wether rainey all day.
  13. Went to Colgrove, got Orson pair boots.  Got old plow from L. Greeley.  Wether snow all day.
  14. Sunday.  At home all day.  Wether fair.
  15. Went in the sugarbrush.  Commenced tapping.  Cleared wood.  Wether fair.
  16. Entered judgement for Mr. Brewer vs. C. M. Hill.  Wether fair.
  17. Issued exicution.  Wether fair.
  18. Went in sugarbush.  Wether fair til just at night.  Rained a little.
  19. Worked papering our room.  Wether showery.  The first thunderstorm of the season.
  20. Gave receipt for code on exicution.  Finished papering room.  Went up to Rifles.
  21. Sunday.  At home all day.  Wether showery, rain and snow.
  22. Worked in house all day, wether couldy with little snow.
  23. Issued summonses.  Went down to William Evens' and ate dinner.  Wether a little snow in the forenoon, afternoon fair.
  24. Went in sugarbush.  Brung up buckets.  School closed.  Wether fair.
  25. Went down to John's.  Made ax handles.  Wether fair.
  26. Belts came and paid the Spensor debt.  Went to see Frank Gallup's horse.  Wether fair.
  27. Went to Colegrove.  Traded oxen for horses.  Wether fair fore noon.  Afternoon cloudy with little snow.
  28. Sunday.  Went down to John's.  Got butter.  Wether fair.
  29. Rote a lease for White and Hill.  Wether coald with a little rain.
  30. Rote to John Kinney for Orson.  Peap toades out. Wether cloudy with little rain.
  31. At home all day.  Wether rainey all day.  Watter very hy.

April, 1886

  1. Made one mink and one hawk sertificate.  Wether cold and cloudy fore noon, afternoon fairer.
  2. Went up to Mrs. Rifles with Orson.  Wether changeable, some cloudy and some sunshine.
  3. Went down to Johns.  J. G. Cook paid judgement.  Wether fair.
  4. Sunday, at home all day.  Wether snow 1/2 inch deep then morning cloudy and snowed a little most all day.
  5. Went to Colegrove.  Drove the white mair the first time.  Got pair of pants, $1.25, got medicine from Buffalo.  Wether cloudy commenced snowing about 4 o'clock and snowed very past 9 o'clock.  Still snowing.  Mary Zimmerman's father came to see hir today.  Orson went to Smethport after feed.
  6.  Made a pair of whiffletrees.  George sick.  Wether mixed snow and rain all day.
  7. Went down to Johns.  Bot tub of butter, 23 1/2 lbs. 23 cents per pound.  Wether snowing a little all day.
  8. Put iron on whiffletrees.  Got 500 lbs. hay, $5.00.  Wether fair.
  9. Went in sugarbush this forenoon.  Worked fixing table.  Afternoon wether fair.
  10. Went up to Cook's camp to see a horse.  Got corn bread.  Wether fair.
  11. Sunday, at home all day.  Children all went in the sugarbush.  Wether fair.
  12. Went to Colegrove.  Drove the white mair.  Zimmerman folks moved away.  Wether fair.
  13. Hitched the two horses together.  Drove to Wendles.  Went to J. Greeley.  Wether rainy. 
  14. R. H. Evans came here.  Stayed here last night.  I went to J. Greeley's and blowed out five stumps.
  15. Fixed baby crib Orson built.  Rode fence.  R. H. Evans here this evening.  Wether fair.
  16. Went to Smethport .  Drawed balance of money from D. C. Young to the amount of $11,800.  Went over to  E. Windsors.  George and Chloey and Rose Kinney came out here.  Wether fair.
  17. Went to Port to see B. Gallup.  Went and paid Mr. Baird and got some more dinimite.  Got a bottle of aromatic wine.  Got Olive a dress.  Ate dinner at Wills.  Went over to Carolines. Maty and Harry coming down with whooping cough.  Wether fair.
  18. Sunday.  Stayed at Caroline's last night.  Went to meeting.  Went down to E. Buckley's and went to Orsens and Orens.  See Mr. Hodges.  Stayed at Orens.  Wether fair.
  19. Bot horse off E. Goodrich and pig off E. Buckley.  Came home.  Traded gray mair for hay horse.  Wether fair.
  20. Got horse shod and commenced plowing.  Wether fair forenoon, rainy afternoon.
  21. Went up to Rifle camp.  Went to Colegrove.  Got hat.  Wether fair.
  22. Went down to John's.  Got feed oats.  Drove the little sorel mair I bot at E. Goodrich.  Wether fair.
  23. Went to Colgrove.  Got grass seed.  Went up to Allards, bot hay.  Orson sowed oats below the road.  Wether fair.
  24. Let John have grass seed and got Buty of Lebanon potatoes planted half-bushel early rose potato.  Got a letter from Olive.  Wether forenoon fair, afternoon thunderstorms.
  25. Sunday went to Colegrove to meeting.  Heard Elder Mitchelmore preach.  Wether fair.
  26. Went to see Rifle about trucks.  Went and blowed out rocks for Colegrove, blowed stumps for Bartlet.  Got back and plowed.  Wether fair.  Griffth hitched on to G. Evans.
  27. Went to Smith and Halls.  Got some lumber.  Orson got horse shod.  Got my buggy fixed.  Wether is sunshine and rain.  Rained last night.
  28. Went to Hamlin to help W. Brewer to put sills under house.  Blowed out tree stumps for McGee.
  29. Went to Hamlin.  Helped W. Brewer on house.Heavy frost last night.  Wether fair. 
  30. Went down to help Brewer on his house.  Got timber for waggon tong.  Wether rain the morning, fair afternoon.


May, 1886

  1. At home all day.  Not feeling well.  Orson, George and Berthy went to Annin today.  Got letter from R. H. Evans.  Wether fair.
  2. Sunday.  Home all day.  Rote two letters, one to R. H. Evans and to a camp.  Wether fair.  Quite a hevy frost this morning.
  3. Went to Hamlin.  Mailed letter to R. H. Evans.  Wether fair,  Frost last night.
  4. Worked fixing trucks.  Orson plowed side hill.  Mary got hir bask cut out.  Whether fair forenoon.  Afternoon cloudy and rain.  Thunderstorms tonight.
  5. Mary went to Colegrove.  Got 3 bits, tea and soda crackers.  Wether rainy forenoon, fair sfternoon.
  6. Went and blowed out stumps for D. D. Combs.  Went to Smethport to post meeting.  Stayed at Perces Hotel all night.  Wether fair.
  7. Came from Smethport to Combs', blowed out stumps til noon.  Came home.  Went to Hamlin to meeting of the E. A. U. Society.  Wether fair except a little shower.
  8. Went to Annin Creek.  Wether fair.
  9. Sunday.  Stayed to Caroline's.  Went to meeting in morning.  Wether fair.
  10. Went down to Ely Buckley's.  Wether rainy forenoon.  Fair in  afternoon.
  11. Came home.  Stayed at Chloey's and Olive's.  Got 50 lbs. dinomite at Bards, Port Allegany.  Wether fair.
  12. Went to Combes.  Blasted stumps.  Went to Smethport.  Bot a wagon $20.00.
  13. Orson and wife went to Colegrove.  Got girls shooz and planted in garden.  I went up to L. Denison's.  Took logs to draw for A. Brewer.  Took horse to move for A. Rifle.  Wether forenoon rain, afternoon changeable.
  14. Went down to Eberts.  Went to Hamlin in evening to E.A.U. meeting.  Wether cloudy.
  15. At house all day.  Orson and George went to Smethport and got wagon.  Wether rainy all day.
  16. Sunday.  Went down to John's.  Got hair cut.  Charles Evans and wife there.  Wether showry and cool.

  18. Went into Dunbar Hollow to see C. A. White.  Bot two shirts at C. A. Anderson's.  Orson truck logs for A. Brewer.  Wether fair, frost this morning.
  19. Went over to Eastman's.  Got buggy.  Orson pealed bark.  Wether fair.
  20. Fixed buggy.  Went to Colegrove.  Wether fair.

June, 1886

  1. Went on the hill to look for the cow.  Red cow came in.  Drove to Smethport in evening.  Wether fair.
  2. Went to Smethport to Decoration and unveiling of Soldiers Monument.  Wether fair until just at night.  Quite a shower.
  3. Went to Port Allegany.  Stayed at Olive's all night.  Wether fair.
  4. Went up to Chloey's and to Port Allegany and to Burtville.  Wether fair.
  5. Stayed with Elder Levenworth(sp).  Broke buggy.  Took wheel up to Rewlet.  Bot a buggy.  Went over to Annin.  Hayed G. Kinney.  Wether fair.
  6. Sunday.  Went to Turtle to meeting twice.  Wether fair.
  7. Came home and went to school meeting.  Wether fair.
  8. Made two owl certificates for Oviatt.  Mary went to Annin.  Went up and worked on Rifle's blacksmith shop.  Wether fair.
  9. Orson cow had twin bull calves.  Worked on Rifles shop.  Wether fair.

  16. Blowed stumps for W. Dickerson.  Worked on shop.  Orson sowed millet.  Wether rain.
  17. Worked on shop.  Black cow drawed.  Wether rain.  Got pension check.
  18. Finished Rifle's shop.  Took broadax home.  Wether fair.
  19. Went to Colegrove.  Got pail diper and broom for schoolhouse.  Worked on stoop backside of house.  Wether fair.
  20. At home all day.  Wether fair.
  21. Went to Port Allegany, got compers and went up to Mr. Dickerson's.  Put in 10 shots.  Wether variable, some rain, some sunshine.
  22. Went up to blow out some rocks for McCray on the slide.  Wether some rain.
  23. Fixed the little chair.  Went to Hamlin to E.A.U. meeting.  Was examined for insurance.  Wether rainy.
  24. Put shelves in butry.  Wether rainy.
  25. At home all day sick.  Elder Gates and wife called here today.  Wether rainy.
  26. At home all day sick.  A little better than yesterday.  Put up shelves in corner of my room.  Wether rainy in morning, afternoon fair.
  27. Sunday.  At home all day.  Wether fair.
  28. At home all day.  Worked some on the back stoop.  Wether fair.
  29. Cultivated potatoes.  Wether fair.
  30. At home all day.  Worked howing a little while.  Wether fair.  Orson came home, brot a hired girl with him.


July, 1886

  1. Went to Rifles.  Got buckwheat.  Orson sowed buckwheat.  Went to E.A.U. meeting for installation of officers.  Wether fair.
  2. Went and got buggy tier set and ate dinner at Kimballs.  Wether fair.
  3. Worked fixing stable.  Mary and I went up to Genesee to see Mrs. Bates.  Wether fair.
  4. Sunday.  Went to the Big Bridge.  Berthy went with me.  Wether fair.
  5. Went to Smethport with the mair.  Got the pump fixed.  Paid G. A. K. quarterly dues, $1.00.  Wether fair.
  6. Made water trauth and took it on the hill.  Set it at the spring.  Fixed the pump in well.  Wether fair and very hot.
  7. Worked in  garden and howing potatoes.  Wether fair.
  8. Worked howing potatoes.  Wether fair.
  9. Went to Colegrove, got a sack of flour.  Went to Hamlin, got some stone pipe from schoolhouse.  Wether varyable; some sun, some cloudy with heavy shower at 6 o'clock.
  10. Went to Wm. Rifles.  Went to Colegrove.  Wether fair.
  11. Sunday.  At home all day.  Wether fair.
  12. Went to Wm. Rifles.  Bot mowing mashine off Wm. Rifles.  Went down to Smith and Halls.  Got feed.  Went up to Biehlers and got horse rope.  Commenced haying at 11 o'clock.  Wether fair.  Frost this morning killed potatoes and buckwheat on the flat near the creek.
  13. Got all the hay in above the road and load from below.  Wether fair.
  14. Worked in the barn.  Fixed scafold.  Put paint barril in the barn.  Wether rainy.  Heavy rain last night.
  15. At home all day.  Not feeling very well.  Wether showery.
  16. Went up to Dickerson's.  Made garden gate.  Wether cloudy, no rain.
  17. At home all day and feeling very poorly.  Received a letter from Caroline and from Olive.  Orson got our lode of hay into the barn.  Whether fair til just nite, lite shower.
  18. At Kane all day.  Orson, George and Hatty went to the Big Bridge.  The ----- his horse here on the 13th and got his buggy.  Wether fair.
  19. Put roof on stoop.  Mowed some grass with sythe.  Raked and drawed in hay.  Got the hay out of the swamp.  Mowed may weed along side the road.
  20. Went to Colegrove in forenoon.  Raked and got in hay in afternoon.  Sold sum hay to G. Perry.  Wether fair.
  21. Fixed pump this morning.  Stired hay.  Orson finished mowing.  Put mashine away.  Reked and cecked up rest of hay.  Wether quite cloudy.
  22. Got up this morning feeling quite poorly.  Loaded two lodes of hay.  Went to Colegrove.  Orson finished haying.  Sold 1 tun to Mr. Clinginswirth and 1/2 ton to C. A. Anderson.  Wether fair.
  23. Went to Smethport.  Paid $30.00 on Orson's judgement and had note against W. E. Windsor recorded.  Wether fair.
  24. At home all day.  Wether fair.
  25. Went out to the Big Bridge and took Mary.  Bertha had nose blead when we came back.  Wether fair.
  26. Rote letter to P. H. Parker about schoolhouse and Frank Gallup's wife to teach this school.  Orson went to Smethport after medicine for Bertha.  Wether showery.
  27. Went to Smethport.  Let Hamlin have note against W. E. Windsor.  Bot note of Orson.  Made Bill of Sale of Property to pay for note.  Got the mair shod and went to Caroline's.  Wether  fair.
  28. Went over to Burtville.  Got my buggy and stayed at Tomey Knapps all night.  Wether fair.
  29. Went over to G. Kinneys and to G Windsors and back over to Caroline's.  Wether showery just at night.
  30. Came home.  Wether fair.
  31. Got up at one o'clock and made out a warrant.  Prisoner brot in this morning.  Wether fair.

August, 1886

  1. At home til just at night.  Went to hire a girl.  Mary went with me.  Wether fair.
  2. Went to Smethport.  Got --------- ---------- for Caroline.  Orson got horses shod.  Wether fair.
  3. Went to Colegrove.  Telegraphed for Doctor Sharp for Bertha.  At home the rest of the day.  Doct came.  Wether fair with hy winds and cool.
  4. Went to Bissels.  Broke horse.  Went to Colegrove got medcine for Bertha  Orson cut our field of oats.  Wether fair.
  5. Bertha very sick.  Went to Turtlepoint after Dr. MacDougall.  Had him and Sharpe here together.  Drove to Turtlepoint and back betwean 6 and 9 o'clock.  Wether rained all the afternoon.

December, 1888

  1. Worked fixing stable.  Literary Society at schoolhouse last nite.  Wether cloudy.

  3. Commenced assessing.  Orson brot his tools from the McKan job and took job from G. A. Burdick.  Wether cloudy.
  4. Got horse shod and fixed the shop to put the bugy in.  Wether cloudy with little snow.
  5. Went up to Havens ? Brook and took assessment.  Wether cloudy.
  6. Went up to Oviatt's and took assessment.  Wether cloudy with 2 inches snow last nite.
  7. Went to Colegrove taking assessment.  Ate dinner at John Evans'.  Wether fair.

  30. Went to Colegrove to get cloth for fine shirt and Richey flanel for shirt.  Got cuff buttons.  Stoped to John's and ate dinner.
  31. Went to Smethport.  Sent pension claim and Power of Attorny to Milo B. Stevens & Co..  J. P. Evans went with me.  Wether snowy all day.

February, 1889
  1. Fixed striking wate on big clock and set it running and looked over old papers.  Wether coald and snowy.
  2. Fixed rein on cutter.  Wether coald, some snow.
  3. Sunday.  Rote letter to Chase Brothers and returned order for trees.  Wether cloudy and coald.
  4. Cut some wood.  Don chores.  Went to Colegrove.  Got box of medicine.  Wether cloudy.
  5. At home all day.  Wether snowy nearly all day so men could not work.
  6. At home all day.  Wether to coald for me to go out.  I think it is the coldest of the seson.



That was the last entry in Sylvester's journal until July 18th, 1889. 
The following entry was made by his daughter-in-law, Mary:

According to our records, Sylvester was married to Caroline Howard on July 10th, 1889 at the home of G. A. Buckley of Annin Creek.
